Grady RylanderH. Grady Rylander, M.D.

Dr. Grady Rylander is a board certified General Ophthalmologist with a special interest in retina, glaucoma, and cataract. He has been in practice in Austin since 1978. He has performed thousands of cataract surgeries and hundreds of laser procedures in the office.

Dr. Rylander, an Austin native, attended The University of Texas at Austin where he is also currently a Professor. He teaches in the Bio Medical Engineering Department at the University. He has supervised 40 Master of Science students and 11 Ph.D. students. He has been married for over 40 years and has 3 children and 5 grandchildren.

Gary RylanderGary R. Rylander, M.D.

Dr. Gary Rylander is a native Austinite and younger brother of his partner, Dr. Grady Rylander. He is board certified in General Ophthalmology with special training in anterior segment problems of the eye. His training includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Masters of Science in Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin and medical school at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

In 1982, Dr. Rylander returned to Austin to practice ophthalmology with his present partners. His specialty interests in ophthalmology include cornea and external diseases of the eye and anterior segment surgery (cataract surgery, corneal surgery, etc.). He provides ophthalmologic care for patients from the Second Street Ministries, Austin Independent School District Needy Student program, and the Mental Health Mental Retardation program.

Dr. Rylander is married with two sons and a daughter. He is quite involved with family activities as well as many scientific and cultural activities.

Janet Lindsey

Janet A. Lindsey, M.D.

Dr. Lindsey is board certified in General Ophthalmology. She has been licensed and certified as a physician and eye surgeon to care for patients with cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal diseases. She performs laser surgery in the office, and fits contact lenses when desired.

Dr. Lindsey has published original research in leading ophthalmic journals and actively participates in continuing medical education.

Dr. Lindsey was born in Casper, Wyoming, but has lived most of her life in Texas. Her interest in medicine developed out of a combined interest in people and science. She enjoys volunteer work as well as being very active in her children’s school, and spends all her “free” time with her family.

Andrew Ross

Andrew W. Ross, M.D.

Dr. Ross practices General Ophthalmology and treats a variety of eye conditions requiring medical and surgical management, including cataracts and glaucoma. Dr. Ross’ training includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics as well as a PhD in Atomic and Molecular Physics. He completed medical school at Baylor College of Medicine, internship at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, and Ophthalmology training at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA.

Dr. Ross was born in Boston, MA, but was raised from the age of four in Austin, where he attended McCallum High School. After completing his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, he returned to Austin for graduate school. Prior to going to medical school, he worked for several years in Austin in the electronics industry. He has been married for twenty years, and his wife is also a practicing physician.

Todd Smith

R. Todd Smith, M.D.

Dr. Smith was born and raised in Austin. He graduated from Westwood High School and then attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas where also played baseball. He graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry. He then attended the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, earning the degree of Doctor of Medicine with honors.

Dr. Smith knew he wanted to pursue a surgical subspecialty in medical school as he gained experience and skill in the operating room. He admired vision as a special gift and his interest in the anatomy and physiology of the visual system combined with the challenge of ophthalmic surgery made ophthalmology a perfect match for him.

Upon completion of medical school, Dr. Smith was accepted into the ophthalmology residency program at Baylor College of Medicine, an institution consistently ranked among the finest training programs in the world. As a resident he was thoroughly trained in ophthalmology and learned the latest technologies the field offers.

Dr. Smith truly values the physician-patient relationship. His primary goal is to establish a good relationship with his patients and discuss in detail the findings of the eye exam and thoroughly explain the rationale for medical and/or surgical treatment if indicated.

His interests include small-incision cataract surgery, glaucoma, diabetes, refractive surgery and comprehensive ophthalmology, including medical and surgical treatment of many diseases of the eye. He also provides routine eye exams for contact lenses or glasses.

Dr. Smith enjoys spending his free time with his wife and 3 children, as well as golfing, fishing, and baseball.

Steven McKinley

Steven H. McKinley, M.D.

Dr. McKinley was raised in Michigan and attended the University of Michigan for his undergraduate and medical education. Having lived in Southeast Asia at various times in his formative years, Dr. McKinley was able to experience international medicine while in Singapore before commencing his residency training in Ophthalmology and a fellowship in glaucoma at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX.

Dr. McKinley joined the Eye Institute of Austin after beginning his career in private practice in Raleigh, NC.  He is available for medical and surgical management of glaucoma, cataract surgery, and evaluation of general diseases of the eye.  In his spare time, he enjoys golf, tennis, and traveling.  As a college sports enthusiast, he is delighted to have experienced life in Big Ten, ACC, and now, Big 12 country.

Lori-PicLori M. Murphy, M.D.

Dr. Murphy was born and raised in Houston, TX.  After graduating from Clear Lake High School, she attended The University of Texas at Austin where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and then completed her medical degree at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston

With a deep appreciation for the gift of vision, she decided to pursue an ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.  Throughout this training, she learned that a good relationship with her patients is fundamental to providing high quality health care.  Dr. Murphy firmly believes taking time to educate patients on their eye conditions and to discuss prevention and management is essential to providing patients with a great experience.

She is available for routine eye exams and for the evaluation of many general eye conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal diseases. Her surgical interests include cataract surgery, pterygium excision, and basic plastic procedures.

Dr. Murphy enjoys spending time with her husband and son.  Her hobbies are centered around her love for the outdoors and exercise which includes:  hiking, biking, kayaking, and kickboxing.
